Here are 10 things to keep in mind when using Plaquenil Take it on a regular schedule, meaning at the same time each day. Take Plaquenil EXACTLY as prescribed by your physician. Do not stop taking the medication without first speaking to your doctor. Taking Hydroxychloroquine with food and/or milk can help prevent stomach upset. You really should talk to your doctor about your tapering schedule and any side effects you’re experiencing. They may want you to slow down. Plaquenil can take up 1-2 months to start working and up to six months for full effect. More information for Plaquenil can be found here. Have you been prescribed steroid treatment for your RA? Plaquenil is used in the treatment of sarcoidosis but its main use is in the treatment of malaria. One of the side effects of taking the drug is that it affects eye sight, and eye tests, especially field of vision tests need to be done every six months. For the four years that I took the drug.

Did you take yourself off Plaquenil, or did your doctor tell you to go off it? Plus I will be honest the whole eye site thing even though rare has always freaked me out. I went off of it to see if I can manage not being on it as my lupus isnt as severe as other cases but already I am feeling very fatigued and my legs feel heavy if that makes sense. I can discuss alternatives with my DR at my next appt but my DR feels as though the plaq is the best bet for my level of illness. If so are you just dealing with Lupus symptoms or did you take another med? I'm on Plaquenil, and after the first week's GI upset, I have had no problems with it.

Dr. Douglas Mund, State University of New York Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine Answered Nov. 17, 2013 Hi everybody! I recently went to the doc and he recommended that I try cutting my Plaquenil in half from 400mg to 200mg/day. I have been on it since March, 2002. It's been about a week and I have noticed a few slight changes, mainly a little stiffness in my fingers and feeling a little fatigued. I don't know I have been taking Plaquenil 400 mg per day for about 2 years now due to lupus flare. When i first started it, I was also started on prednisone to get my inflammation under control. Actually I started on 200 mg per day and about 2 months before tapering off pred, he upped me to 400 mg per day of plaquenil to give it plenty of time to kick in.
