Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Basically, the immune system is a bit out of control. Plaquenil works by suppressing the immune system. Unfortunately you can't tell it to attack just the germs so you suppress all of its function to spare your healthy tissue- in your husband's case, his eyes, mouth, throat. NOTE Plaquinil and hydroxychloroquine are essentially the same drug. I have been diagnosed for 12 years and I was a complete mess at first. Initially, I was only on Prednisone, then Plaquenil as well. Plaquenil worked wonders for me. I have now been off the Prednisone for 2 years and only on 300mg of Plaquenil daily. My doctor says there are lots of studies proving Plaquenil is very beneficial to those with lupus.
